- Solo el 3% de los desechos electrónicos de América Latina se recogen a través de conductos formales y se tratan de manera respetuosa con el medio ambiente, según un informe de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU).
- El Día Mundial del Medio Ambiente, celebrado cada año el 5 de junio, es una oportunidad para reflexionar acerca de la necesidad de implementar pautas de economía circular y desarrollo sostenible en todos los aspectos.
- En esta fecha, Intel reconoce que cada pequeña acción cuenta y que se puede marcar la diferencia al tomar decisiones sostenibles en el día a día como la reutilización y reciclaje de residuos electrónicos.
Los residuos electrónicos se han convertido en una de las categorías de desechos de más rápido crecimiento en el mundo. Los dispositivos antiguos y en desuso, como teléfonos móviles, computadores, tablets y electrodomésticos, contienen una variedad de componentes delicados y valiosos que necesitan ser gestionados adecuadamente. En el marco del Día Mundial del Medio Ambiente, Intel se une a la iniciativa global para promover el reciclaje responsable de residuos electrónicos y resaltar los múltiples beneficios que esto conlleva para el entorno.
En América Latina, la generación de residuos electrónicos aumentó un 49% en nueve años, pasando de 0,9 Mt en 2010 a 1,3 Mt en 2019, de acuerdo con el último Monitor Regional de Residuos Electrónicos para América Latina desarrollado por la ONU. Además, solo el 3% de los desechos electrónicos de la región se recogen a través de conductos formales y se tratan de manera respetuosa con el medio ambiente.
En el Perú, el Plan Colectivo RLGA, el sistema colectivo de recolección selectiva encargado de gestionar ambientalmente los Residuos de Aparatos Eléctricos y Electrónicos (RAEE), recicló alrededor de 12 mil toneladas de RAEE hasta finales de 2022 en apoyo con otras empresas del sector, con la finalidad de aprovechar nuevamente los materiales para crear nuevas alternativas amigables con el ambiente.
“Es necesario que nuestras acciones vayan más allá de las palabras cuando nos referimos a sostenibilidad. Nuestro mayor interés en Intel es crear un mundo mejor para las nuevas generaciones y sin duda alguna, el manejo adecuado de los residuos electrónicos es una acción clave para lograrlo, con el objetivo de hacerle frente al cambio climático y reducir la huella de carbono”, afirma Gisselle Ruiz Lanza, directora General de Intel para América Latina.
Teniendo en cuenta lo anterior, es indispensable tomar medidas con respecto a los desechos electrónicos para abordar los desafíos ambientales y la necesidad de proteger el planeta. Por esto, Intel presenta tres recomendaciones clave para transformar este panorama entre todos:
- Hacer uso responsable de los dispositivos: antes de tomar la decisión de comprar un nuevo dispositivo electrónico, es indispensable analizar el uso que se le va a dar y tener claras las necesidades y expectativas que se tienen a la hora de adquirirlo para que de esta manera se pueda utilizar de manera duradera y que no se convierta en un residuo electrónico en un corto plazo.
- Acudir a centros de reciclaje autorizados: antes de deshacerse de cualquier dispositivo electrónico, es necesario investigar y localizar centros de reciclaje autorizados en cada área. Estos centros tienen los conocimientos y las instalaciones necesarias para reciclar adecuadamente los residuos electrónicos y evitar su disposición inapropiada en vertederos o su envío a países en desarrollo. En Perú, puntos como el Centro Comercial Mega Plaza en Lima (Claro), Centro Comercial Real Plaza en Chiclayo (Entel) y en la Calle Federico Moore N° 187, en Puno (Movistar), entre otras ubicaciones, reciclan los dispositivos electrónicos a los cuales se les ha dejado de dar uso.
- Fomentar la reutilización: si un dispositivo electrónico todavía está en buen estado de funcionamiento, es posible considerar donarlo o venderlo a un tercero. Al alargar la vida útil de los productos electrónicos, se reducen las demandas de recursos naturales y se evita la generación de nuevos residuos.
Al tomar en acción estas recomendaciones, se logran numerosos beneficios para el medio ambiente y la sociedad en general como la recuperación de materiales valiosos, como metales preciosos, plásticos y vidrios, reduciendo la necesidad de extraer nuevos recursos naturales. Así mismo, el reciclaje adecuado de estos dispositivos garantiza que los materiales peligrosos se eliminen de manera segura, evitando su liberación al medio ambiente y reduciendo el riesgo de contaminación del aire, el agua y el suelo. Por último, se contribuye a la reducción de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero y la huella de carbono a través de una economía circular.
